Florida Surgical Technology

A surgical technologist prepares an operating room for surgery, assists the surgeon during the procedure, and then cleans the operating room when the procedure is over. In the state of Florida, all surgical technologists must maintain a valid certification to be able to work. In order to get certified, a technician must have the proper level of education.

Educational Requirements For Surgical Technologists

In order to become certified as a surgical technologist, you must have at least an associate’s degree in surgical technology from an accredited school. The degree typically takes two years to complete and consists of classes concerning:

  • Surgical procedures
  • Operating room terminology
  • Identifying and caring for surgical instruments
  • Understanding of current surgical technologies
  • Controlling infection
  • Human anatomy
  • Psychology
  • Disease identification and treatment
  • Pharmacology

To obtain your surgical technologist certification, there are special licensing courses you must take before being approved. You must also complete several hours of practical experience in surgical procedures and utilization of surgical equipment before you can be certified. You can contact the National Board Of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting for the most recent licensing requirements.

Opportunities in the Surgical Technology Field

Once you have obtained your surgical technologist degree and certification, you will be legally able to pursue a career as a surgical technologist. You can work in settings such as hospital emergency rooms, hospital operating rooms, surgical clinics, outpatient programs, and private doctors’ practices.

If you are looking for a rewarding career in the medical field that has a positive growth projection for the future, then consider becoming a surgical technologist. It is a profession that requires a strong constitution and is not for the squeamish, but if you can get yourself certified, then your job opportunities can be significant.
