Florida Nutritionist

The demand for nutritionists is on the rise, in part because of increased focus on eating better to be healthier. A career as a nutritionist can be quite a rewarding and lucrative career. In the State of Florida, specific educational and licensing requirements must be met for all practicing nutritionists.

The work of a nutritionist

Nutritionists work in a variety of occupational settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and physician’s offices. Nutritionists promote healthy eating and diet modification. They design food and nutrition programs and assist with meal preparation. As more people have become dedicated to healthier eating and the impact of a healthier diet on overall health has become known, the need for properly licensed nutritionists continues to rise. If you would like to plan menus, help people eat healthier and improve their overall health, gaining hands-on experience, this may be the ideal career for you.

Nutritionist education and licensing requirements in Florida

The Dietetic and Nutrition Practice Council was established to ensure that every dietitian, nutritionist or nutrition counselor meets minimum requirements for safe practice. The Florida Department of Health indicates that the Dietetic and Nutrition Practice Council is responsible for licensing, monitoring, disciplining and educating dietitians, nutritionists, and nutrition counselors to assure competency and safety to practice in Florida. Every prospective nutritionist must meet strict requirements. Requirements to become a nutritionist in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Health, includes possession of a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a major in human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics or food management. A master’s degree can potentially lead to even greater career opportunities and earning potential . Explore the nutrition programs offered at various colleges and determine which one is best for you. Successful completion of 900 hours of pre-professional planned and continuous supervised practice in nutrition or dietetics and successful completion of the required exam is also required. Section 456.013(7), Florida Statutes also mandates completion of a 2-hour course relating to prevention of medical errors as part of the licensure and renewal process.
