Florida Medical Lab Technician

There are many different requirements to become a medical lab technician in the state of Florida. The career path of a medical lab technician is on the rise and there are typically many available openings in this field. The requirements are strict due to the seriousness of the job and what it entails. Not only will you need a formal education at a college but you will also need to complete several different examinations before you can become certified as a medical lab technician in Florida.

Florida’s licensing board for a medical lab technician requires many educational requirements. The requirements include having completed an approved medical/clinical laboratory training program. If you do not complete the approved medical/clinical laboratory training program you must have obtained five years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience before applying for a license. If you have not obtained 5 years of pertinent clinical lab experience, you may have earned an Associates Degree plus 4 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience before applying for a license in the state of Florida. Another option to becoming licensed is to have earned a Bachelors Degree and have had three years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience.

Besides having to have hands on training as well as a formal education, you will be required to take, and pass, different examinations. The tests that you will need to pass include the AMT, ASCP, or AAB’s Board of Registry’s exam for medical laboratory technicians.

Being in the field of medical lab technicians will offer great responsibility. A lab tech will be required to help analyze the patient’s specimens, search for microorganisms, parasites, or bacteria that can lead to illness and disease, and perform medical tests on tissue, blood, or bodily fluids.

There are many different Florida training schools to choose from that will be able to help you begin your journey in the medical field.
